Days 7-8: Narita to Kusatsu 251km 8.75hrs: Kusatsu to Myoko. 137km 4 hours

Dick has been enjoying posting on his blog
And riding the bike in Japan
where everyone drives very carefully and rarely exceeds 40km/h

It is quite relaxing for me on the back.
Especially when we left the conurbation and we arrived in the mountains
Where there is very little traffic...

And where it is much cooler
24.5degC at Narita, 12.5 degC up the mountains at Kusatsu
It would have been much hotter further up where the volcano is active!

Our first Onsen experience at Kusatsu
Everything we had been told is true
I liked the 1:1 attention and all the lotions and potions

Next day we rode around the mountain
Through small villages where flooding is being managed
With reinforced river banks.

Through villages with vegetable crops cabbages, onions, potatoes...
And rice paddies being readied for planting
Some late cherry blossom too.

At Sagudaira there are many football and rugby fields
The Italian team will be based here for the Rugby World Cup.
They will enjoy the local crisp apple biscuits at Sagu Cafe.

To Myoko a mountain town
With a nice hotel Arai up on the slopes.
Where skiers and boarders are making the most of the spring snow.

A traditional Japanese meal
For dinner each night.
Pictures posted for your delectation.

Day 7: Narita to Kusatsu

Farewell dinner at Narita Hilton Hotel. I’ll let the menu explain each dish.

Onto the Motorway to Tokyo, past the port at Yokohama

Along the riverside are many football fields and baseball pitches. Tokyo Tree in central Tokyo is not far away from us.

Some may think we need a dose of this...
Azaleas are in bloom, rocks and  bonsai trees feature in the gardens.

Warning signs. This is where we were turned back to Kusatsu.

The next  morning we decide to try again to ride up the mountain - but we’re stopped just after we leave the hotel at Kusatsu.

Soon he had his arms crossed indicating we could not proceed.
The GPS shows what we will miss. She doesn’t know that there is an active volcano up there.
We decide to go around the mountain to Myoko and this Map shows the route.

Delicious apple crisps served with coffee at Sagudaira.

Other bikers are curious about us. Their bikes would be easier for me to get onboard!

Rugby World Cup 2019. They told us that Sagudaira is the main rugby area in Japan.

Alpine architecture - an international style.

Rice paddies quite high in the mountains.

We ordered two different options. One with Sushi and the other with tempura. Sukiyaki is the main event. I think it is the first time we have eaten sukiyaki and we were glad that we had some expert assistance as we cooked the vegetables and beef at the table.
