Day 19: Isafjordur to Laugarbakki, 380km

What a difference the sun makes.
The temperatures was 10 -13 degC today but it felt much colder than the last three days when the temperature range was the same.

My dark motorcycle jacket and trousers make me an effective radiant heat absorber...
...When the sun is shining.

So far today we have been warmed by the radiant warmth of smiles.
Sigga's smile as she made us morning coffee anda fresh roll and cheese....
Kristoff's smile as he brought us a mammoth pizza for lunch...
Orn's  smile as he welcomed us to Laugerbakki Hotel.

We rode from the West Fjord region to the north west region of Iceland. 
Much of the ride was on gravel roads alongside the fjords and over a high pass and a couple of lower passes.

An almost monochromatic day...
Interspersed with splashes of green...
And of  the splashes of colour on our plates.


Almost all the photos on my blog have been taken as we ride along at around 80kph. 
What you see is what I see from my perch on the motorcycle.
We don't stop on the road to take photos... Although my driver might slow down.

I am using an Olympus Tough TG-4 camera. I have attached it  to a lanyard and hang it around my neck. 
I chose this camera for two main reasons...
The first is that I can turn it on off and take photos whilst wearing motorcycle gloves, and...

We have been toying with the idea of retiring to Iceland, finding a village and staying. This post is exactly what we picture when we dream about it! I too wear a lanyard with a zip string when I ride. Because I'm also driving it is nice to be able to just drop the camera when I need my hand on the grip.

Ngorogoro Crater

Ngorogoro Crater formed 2.5million years ago after a volcanic eruption. The crater is about 19km in diameter and has steep sides. The road descending into the crater is definitely a 4WD road. Steep and rugged. The floor of the crater has lakes which provide water for animals year round. There is a resident population of wildebeest and zebra, buffalo, zebra, many hyena, lions and birds. While we were visiting the area the skies were magnificently moody. The crater is around 2300m altitude so it was pleasantly cool. Short grass necessitates knee bending for the warthog whilst feeding. One of the many hyena cooling off. A weaver bird.  There were lots of weaver bird nests in the trees. Some birds were on the winge carrying straw to their nests. The superb starling. A contented wildebeest Plenty of lions on the prowl.
